Nominated as World Heritage Site in 2005 (https://whc.unesco.org/es/list/569), the city of Gjirokastra is a compendium of Albania’s cultural heritage. Located in the corridor towards Greece, and close to coastal tourist destinations, like Sarande, it is renowned for its Ottoman castle, its genuine architecture with stone roofs (“the Stone city”) and the famous “kulle”, fortified houses where different clans of the region lived.
The project, led by a Rotterdam’s architecture firm, Casanova+Hernández Architects (http://www.casanova-hernandez.com), defined the reorganization of the city’s Museum System. Nartex Barcelona offer an alternative touristic perspective to include
Gjirokastra’s Heritage in the context of the touristic dynamics of Albania.
